What is style?
Style is your unique way of dressing and carrying yourself. It’s an understanding of colour, proportion, and possibly even good taste. When we think about women with style- Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Rihanna, Zendaya, Cate Blanchett, and heaps more- we see all these elements coming together, but they all manipulate them in their own way.
To be stylish is to be yourself. I believe that the manifestation of your personality through your clothing and accessories is true style. It’s wearing a scarf that makes your eyes bright, tilting your hat at a jaunty angle, or wearing a brooch from a thrift shop.
Stylish wears the same glasses for 20 years because they suit her face. Stylish knows herself well enough to avoid most of the fashionable trends. Stylish is everything from relaxed and unaffected to adventurous and daring. Stylish lives by her own design and it resonates in everything that she does.
Stylish knows the rules and bend them to their will.
What is Fashion?
Fashion is what all and sundry are doing and wearing. There’s no individuality in fashion. When you adhere to the whims of fashion, you don’t dress for yourself but wear whatever this designer, that stylist, or that influencer wants you to wear.
This can be damaging for a couple of good reasons:
- You aren’t dressing for your physique or colouring. If we aren’t wearing clothing that is flattering to us, that’s when we begin to feel insecure about how we look. How could we ever be at our most confident if we’re trying to be someone else?
- You can’t assemble a high-functioning wardrobe based on the changing trends from season to season. Fashion only cares about what came before so that it can swing away from it drastically. This means that we can’t take items from fall 2017, and pair them with pieces from fall 2018 because nothing will work together.
It’s crucial to remember that fashion is a business. Without something new every few months, the money tap gets turned off, and millions of people are out of a job.
How to combine style and fashion
Generally, I think it’s best to be permanently stylish. If you’re going to incorporate a trend into your looks, you can buy one or two pieces that don’t cost much money, maybe a particular style of dress, or shoes, or a cardigan or jumper.
Of course, you can always add low-cost accessories, like statement earrings, hats, rings- whatever is in fashion.
It’s significantly more logical to be a woman with style than one of fashion.
For starters, it’s simpler to build a wardrobe. You’ll look first-class because your clothes will coordinate with your body shape and colouring, you’ll feel better because you won’t be trying to look like someone you’re not. Your bank account will thank you because you won’t be rushing to redo your entire wardrobe every few months.
Finding your own style means learning who you are as a person and letting that show through. Your style doesn’t have to be dull or boring, but it does have to be you. Being overly concerned with fashion denotes a lack of grounding that makes for lack of style.
